A devotional I wrote a while ago that I've dedicated to my daughter
We often allow the depth of our feelings to spill out unchecked, heaping abuse on our spouse, never knowing the damage our words can cause. We later try to apologize but many times our spouse will have a glazed look in his or her eyes as something reminds him or her of words hastily spewed with the venom of our feeling of the moment. Once said, never retracted.
My daughter Crystal once said to me as a little girl, 'you hurt my feelings, can I have a band aid?' Oh, that there were such a thing, to instantly heal the scars caused by our careless words tossed with reckless abandonment. Never thinking of what they can do to a relationship. Ah but, that is the key! Catch them before they turn into words.
A simple concept! Think before you speak. But the Bible goes further. It says take those thoughts captive. Put them in prison before they fall out of your mouth on those you love.
Be the master of your thoughts, don't let them master you.
But if you rule your thoughts, with God's help of course, that will do a lot to bridle that nasty tongue.
Take charge of your mouth, don't let it be your undoing. God will help you. He already gave you self-control. Ask for His help, every time you are tempted. He promises to give you a way of escape.
If there are things you must say, do it gently, not like a bomb exploding.
Be gentle when you talk about things. Don't be accusing, just give your feelings. Tell him or her lovingly.
Charity simply means love. Even if there is something you must talk to your spouse about, remember this verse.
Don't be arrogant, just try to find a way to repair, don't try to find fault. Fault doesn't matter. Relationship matters more than proving you are right.
Above all things remember the golden rule. Treat your spouse, as you want to be treated. God said it, I didn't.
